The short version

Float runs entirely on your Mac. We don't collect your data, we don't see your files, and we don't track how you use the app. Your files are yours.

Who we are

Float is developed and operated by Allen Worthley. For the purposes of data protection law (including GDPR), Allen Worthley is the data controller for any personal data processed through this website and the Float app. You can reach us at hello@filefloat.app.

What Float accesses

Float watches folders you choose and displays your recent files. All file access happens locally on your machine through macOS APIs. No file data, filenames, thumbnails, or metadata ever leave your computer.

What we collect

From the app: nothing. Float does not include analytics, telemetry, or tracking of any kind. We don't collect usage data, crash reports, or personal information.

From this website: we don't use cookies, analytics scripts, or third-party trackers. The only data we receive is what you voluntarily submit through the contact form (name, email, message).

From purchases: when you buy a license, Lemon Squeezy (our merchant of record) collects your payment details and email. We receive your email address and license key — not your payment card or billing details.

How we use your data

  • License validation — when you activate a license key, Float sends the key and your machine's hostname to Lemon Squeezy to verify your purchase. Validation happens approximately every 14 days and works offline with a 30-day grace period. Legal basis: contract fulfillment.
  • Auto-updates — Float checks for updates by requesting a small JSON manifest from GitHub. This request contains no personal information. You can switch to manual update mode in Settings. Legal basis: legitimate interest.
  • Contact form — if you send us a message, we use your email to reply. We don't add you to any mailing list. Legal basis: legitimate interest.

Data retention

  • Contact form messages — kept until the conversation is resolved, then deleted. Never more than 12 months.
  • License records — retained by Lemon Squeezy for as long as your license is active. If you request deletion, we ask Lemon Squeezy to remove your data.
  • App data — all settings, pinned files, and preferences are stored locally on your Mac. Nothing is retained by us because nothing is sent to us.

Third parties

  • Lemon Squeezy (merchant of record) — processes payments and manages license keys. Based in the US. See their privacy policy.
  • Cloudflare — hosts this website and routes contact form emails. Based in the US. See their privacy policy.
  • GitHub — hosts update manifests for auto-update checks. Based in the US.

We do not sell, rent, or share your data with anyone else.

International data transfers

Our third-party providers (Lemon Squeezy, Cloudflare, GitHub) are based in the United States. If you are located in the EU/EEA, data processed by these providers may be transferred to the US under their respective data protection agreements and safeguards. Each provider maintains appropriate contractual and organizational measures to protect your data.

Your rights

Regardless of where you live, you can exercise any of these rights by emailing hello@filefloat.app. We will respond within 30 days.

  • Access — request a copy of any personal data we hold about you.
  • Correction — ask us to correct inaccurate data.
  • Deletion — ask us to delete your data. For license records, we will coordinate with Lemon Squeezy.
  • Portability — request your data in a machine-readable format.
  • Objection — object to processing based on legitimate interest.
  • Complaint — if you're in the EU, you have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.

Children's privacy

Float is not directed at children under 16. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children. If you believe a child has submitted data to us, please contact us and we will delete it promptly.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. If we make significant changes, we'll update the date at the top. For material changes that affect how we handle your data, we'll notify existing customers by email.
